Rene

The first time you came over
You dropped your jacket on my floor
Broke my coffee maker
Threw your sweater at my closet door

Mornings I’d wake before you
As the sun crawled cross your skin
The smell of coffee, you’d stretch your arms
As the ceiling fan would spin

Oh Rene you’ve got a way
Everything you say
Sounds like a line
From an unfamiliar play
When I’d say forever
You’d say one day at a time
And though you stay
You’ll never be mine

That summer I tried to show you
How to play guitar
You gave me a list of songs to learn
But we never got really far

I helped you pack up your things
Loaded boxes on my truck
Met your parents at our first place
Your father winked and said good luck

Oh Rene you’ve got a way
Everything you say
Sounds like a line
From an unfamiliar play
When I’d say forever
You’d say one day at a time
And though you stay
You’ll never be mine

Slow dancing in our first apartment
Fishing fruit flies out of wine
Your lips would stain, your eyes grow dark
I guess I didn’t read the sign

Today I drove by that apartment
And I rang our old door bell
Had someone answered and asked
What I wanted, I don’t know I could tell

Oh Rene you’ve got a way
Everything you say
Sounds like a line
From a lost forgotten play
When I’d say forever
You’d say one day at a time
And though you stayed
We knew you’d never be mine

Sweetheart

Sweet heart
Let me hear your singing sweet heart
Every time I hear your voice I
Forget what I was thinking of

Sweet heart
There’s nothing I would change about you
Still I think I might be lying
When I say I love everything that you do

It’s so hard to see a window
When you’re looking for a door
You kick me underneath the table when
my heart won’t stop crying out for more

Don’t leave
Don’t leave me haunted by a shadow
You throw across a dusty floor
Don’t leave me knocking on
A sealed up door

Sweetheart
Feel me fumble in the darkness
Sigh I love you underneath a moan
That you know means I’m afraid
To be alone

It’s so hard to see a window
When you’re looking for a door
You kick me underneath the table when
my heart won’t stop crying out for more

I try
Try and let my love flow freely
Let your hidden smile heal me
I’d like to think I’m worth
What I put you through

You say
Everything will have its reason
But let the changing of the season show
We’re dust
Trying to prove we’re something new

It’s so hard to see a window
When you’re looking for a door
Kick my heart beneath the table when
It starts to cry oh darling I need more

Take me
Oh take me take me with you
There’s a mystery round your eyes that I
I want to spend my days unraveling
’Til I die

Let’s open every window
Let’s knock down every door
Let’s the love inside us freely flow
Then surrender when we can’t take no more

Flag of Love

Our flag of love is tattered and torn
Battered by the wind since the day we were born
It’s stained with tears, spilled coffee, little footprints and a kiss
Its faded Latin inscription, I don’t remember and I miss

I’d give anything to hear you sing to me
Your anthem of love as we dance beneath our flag flying free
And when the sun beats down against it waving at half mast
We’d lie in shelter of the shadow that it casts

Our flag of love flies in the march of liberty
But I haven’t figured out how to love you and feel free
Its carried low, overshadowed by floats with candy thrown
To the crowd that lines the blocked off avenue where our flag is unknown

I’d give anything to hear you sing to me
Your anthem of love as we dance beneath our flag flying free
And when the sun beats down against that flag at half mast
We’d lie in shelter of the shadow that it casts

Bury me, I don’t care where, all wrapped up in our flag
Everyone but you will think I’m covered in a ravaged rag
And by the Scioto River, where we traded dreams and memories
Close your eyes and hear the wind blowing through the trees

I’d give anything to hear you sing to me
Your anthem of love as we dance beneath our flag flying free
And when the sun beats down against that flag at half mast
We’d lie in shelter of the shadow that it casts

Let the world remind us that glory will decay
Darkness falls on everything and nothing here will stay
Maybe the wind that blew against that flag and through your summer hair
Will blow across eternity and we’ll find each other there

And there’s nothing I would trade, for the songs you sang to me
Songs we’ll lose to time, but your voice rings in eternity
And when the sun beats down against that battered flag at half mast
We’ll surrender to the shelter of the shadow that it casts

Storm Before the Calm

We all suffer endlessly more in our minds
Than our real lives
I’m trying to make something out of nothing and then
Find peace in the nothingness I find

There’s not an easy way to get from
The earth up to the stars

We are immortal in everything we want
And mortal when it comes to our fears
A smile fades away in the remains of the day
And we suffer through the memory of tears

You’re only as poor as the things that you want
Oh rich is he who has nothing to crave

You can’t take away what I give away for free
You can’t take away all the love inside of me
You can’t take away

Hold a Candle

We have always been and will be
At the mercy of things we can’t see
The truth will get through
Hit you like a bolt from the blue
No-one holds a candle to you

I’m choking on my golden key
I’m struggling to make sense and be
Something close
To someone you might pass in a dream
I’m lost no matter what may seem

A labyrinth of burning roads
Intersects the viaducts of your dreams
I’m torn and I can’t
Help but let surrender the fold

I’m watching all my autumn leaves
Falling from my branches and then
They float down the stream
Like the rose petals on your breath
On my cheek that reminds me of a losing death

I try to hide my dampened pain
It blossoms like roses in spring rain
You lead me down
Roads whose existence I never knew
Nothing holds a candle to you

Hard to Hear Anything

You’re dancing with reservations in a crowded ballroom
Trading good fortunes with the bride and the groom
The sun is setting through foggy window walls
And I’m lost in a half smile

Maybe I should have let you go a long time ago
Maybe I could find something approximate to your glow
But I feel like a stranger everywhere without you
And I feel home if you’re somewhere I’m close to

It’s hard to hear anything over the sound of my heart
Singing when you come around
And I see the horizon where we’re bound

You pull your hair back and tie it in the hotel mirror
I think you smile slightly and all my clouds clear
I promise to try and get out of your way
If you let me see you get dressed every day

It’s hard to hear anything over the sound of my heart
Singing when you come around
And I see the horizon where we’re bound

In the bar after the wedding, we toast to life and love
You cling to your eyes when you say when push comes to shove
There’s nowhere you would rather be
And for the moment I think I believe

It’s hard to hear anything over the sound of my heart
Singing when you come around
And I see the horizon where we’re bound

Say You Land on a Dream

Crumbled leaves that you can feel
Crackle against your skin a moment that you steal
Cool wind drags the dust down the sidewalk
Over the outlines drawn in chalk

Say you land on a dream
Surround your vision ’til it’s all you see
Broken chains won’t make you free
When you’re tangled in your dreams

Seeds falling on the dirt looking at the sky
October laughing and their throats too dry to cry
Hair soft lifted by a winnowing wind
I’m still searching for clues but now afraid of what I’ll find

Say you land on a dream
Surround your vision ’til it’s all you see
Broken chains won’t make you free
When you’re tangled in your dreams

Conspire with the still still beating sun
Dried vines across the fence down the drains all run
The pipes are clogged and the static on the radio
On your worst days you feel you’ve got nowhere left to go

Say you land on a dream
Surround your vision ’til it’s all you see
Broken chains won’t make you free
When you’re tangled in your dreams

There’s still secrets being revealed
There’s still deep wounds being healed

Say you land on a dream
Surround your vision ’til it’s all you see
Broken chains won’t make you free
When you’re tangled in your dreams

I’m pressing cider out of the blood in my heart
You drink it and make a face it’s too tart
The clouds cast shade across my

Bitter Fruit

The world turns
Like a tired machine
Over its axels howling
I can’t hear anything

The bitter fruit of today
Despite darkness and rain
After the sun resumes it place
Tomorrow will ripen again

The light of day
Crawling through my window
Straining to see
Remnants of the smoke stained defeats

The bitter fruit of today
Despite darkness and rain
After the sun resumes it place
Tomorrow will ripen again

Learn to swim in disappointment
Lest you drown in your sorrow
The temporary nature of today
The permanence of tomorrow

The bitter fruit of today
Despite darkness and rain
After the sun resumes it place
Tomorrow will ripen again

Don’t Want Anyone but You

There’s no limit to what you could put me through
To make me stop trying to rope the moon for you
You’re easy to get near
You’re hard to get close
Some days you’re so alive
Some days you’re a ghost

But I don’t want anyone but you
No I don’t want anyone but you
Now you say I love you
When you just mean “let’s just get through”
Still I don’t want anyone but you

Remember when I drove you to your doctor across town
You laughed and said you’d inherited your grandma’s wedding gown
And you took me to your parent’s house
And you made me some tea
And I’m still caught up in the mystery
Of a look that you gave me

And I don’t want anyone but you
No I don’t want anyone but you
Now you say I love you
You just mean “let’s just get through”
Still I don’t want anyone but you

We’d lie in your drafty dorm room
And share all our dreams
I’ve come to regret nothing
But that’s harder than it seems
I want your life to be easy
And I want you to feel free
But it’s hard to see a stranger
Most nights lying next to me

Still I don’t want anyone but you
No I don’t want anyone but you
Now you say I love you
When you just mean “let’s just get through”
But I don’t want anyone but you

Yeah I won’t want anyone but you
No I won’t want anyone but you
You could wipe away my memories
I could start a life anew
Still I wouldn’t anyone but you

Our Time Was Never Promised

Let’s dance
When no one else is dancing
Let’s sing
When nothing feels entrancing

Our time was never promised
Our time was never promised

Come in sit down
Would you like a water or coffee
I’m sure you’re wondering why
We brought you in here today

I want to be the best that I can be
Sure, but it feels like someone’s always
After me

Let’s take a look at the improvement plan
We gave you several months ago
It’s hard to see any progress
And if there is any, it’s moving too slow

Our time was never promised
Our time was never promised
And if our time is really a gift
Why do we give it to those
Who don’t give a shit about us

Our time was never promised
Our time was never promised
Our time was surely never promised
Our time is a gift that we give and receive
So why do we waste it on those
Who would probably care less
If we died today

I Don’t Know Who Needs to Hear This Now

I don’t know who needs to hear this now
But you are likely with a few exceptions loved
And so it goes wind blows hard against your brow
And you wait so patiently to hear the birds singing up above

There’s a spark, that used to blind and burn the corners of our eyes
There’s a spark that lights a dark and daunting sky
Throw a blanket on your soul and a blindfold on your heart when there’s a spark

I don’t know how it got so cold
I don’t know how the slip stream is now frozen through
I don’t know who needs to hear this now
But this broken world will try to keep you down and no it’s not just you

There’s a spark, that used to blind and burn the corners of our eyes
There’s a spark that lights a dark and daunting sky
Throw a blanket on your soul and a blindfold on your heart when there’s a spark

I don’t know who needs to hear this now
But you are likely with a few exceptions loved
And so it goes love can only keep you so warm
And it’s been so long and now you see the gather of another storm

There’s a spark, that used to blind and burn the corners of our eyes
There’s a spark that lights a dark and daunting sky
Throw a blanket on your soul and a blindfold on your heart when there’s a spark

I don’t know how it got so cold

I know it’s not hard to fall
Blood in the drains and you ran
I know we all down we fall
But hold on to the sky if you can

The love that you so easily give away
Is worth more than any words can say

It’s so easy to be cruel, it’s so easy to be unkind
Your heart and soul dizzy from being shoved

There’s a spark, that used to blind and burn the corners of our eyes
There’s a spark that lights a dark and daunting sky
Throw a blanket on your soul and a blindfold on your heart when there’s a spark

Best for You

Where did all the hours go?
Hours I swear were slow
Forgotten and lost like an hourglass
Spilled on the beach

I wish I could do it again
Don’t know if I could do it again
Memory plays its tricks and then
You think the past is in your reach

I want the best for you
I don’t know what you’re going through
And I don’t have the answers like I used to
But I love you, whatever you do

Not an hour drive from here
There’s a sunflower field
Whose flowers stand over you
After the summer rain

There was a September day
When the clouds parted away
I’d give anything to
Wander through that maze again with you

I want the best for you
I don’t know what you’re going through
And I don’t have the answers like I used to
But I love you, whatever you do

Whatever this is give me more
I always thought that there’d be more
Real love and real joy
Are near impossible outside of our memories

All the exceptions and all the rules
We can’t escape playing the fools
The more you struggle with the binds
The less you’ll ever be free

I want the best for you
I don’t know what you’re going through
And I don’t have the answers like I used to
But I love you, whatever you do

The paradox of painful joy
Deep roots nothing could destroy
Yet still I can’t help but feel
A sadness I can’t express

I guess I thought it’d be infinite
I thought the music would never quit
Years go fast, the cliches you knew
Now they couldn’t be any more true

I want the best for you
I don’t know what you’re going through
And I don’t have the answers like I used to
But I love you, whatever you do

Player Piano

Those around me with a get up and go
Fill me with a lie down and die
Music and family, I know I have the best
“Good enough” is fine by me for all the rest

Ghost shirt not the band society
Let’s all make a choice to be free
Smash your machines before
They take control of thee

Can we all at least agree
We’d rather be human than a slave to a machine
Give me a crumpled bloody page any day
Over a screen

One foot in your career
And one foot in your dream
You never decide which way to go
And life splits you down the seam

Consider all the lilies of the field
They never toil, never spin
And when the wars subside,
And our toils start to din
Do we find peace within?

A step back, after a wrong turn
Is the only way forward

I wanna stand out on the edge
As close as I can without going over
And see what you can’t see from the center

Darkness Is Falling

Shadows gather, stars are sweating the humidity
Cicadas sing their greatest hits in our jukebox memory
The darkness of your eyes, the lightness of your being
You’re the richness of a deeper love, the lightning of a fling
I’m nowhere near where I want to be, that’s alright if you’re around
I’m a lifetime of trying to be around you fore I dive in the ground
We are something more than the sum of our desires
Many times cemented in the freeze, always forged in the fires

Darkness on the water I don’t know where we are bound
But I’ll wreck upon the rocks, fore I turn this ship around

Lost in Hell

Let’s be real
Let’s be honest babe
We thought we were

My autistic honesty
Is such a liability
I wish I could learn to lie
When it better suits my needs
Time blindness I
Have to get a little high
If I want to see what the future holds
Or where it all leads

And we’re lost
We’re lost in hell in hell
As far as I can tell

Say what you want is to see

The path to paradise
Almost always begins in hell
A ghost giving pale advice
Says the difference between love and hate
You will rarely tell
Careful as you climb
Let’s be honest
Up or down
You can always fall
You can always

Here begins a new life
You write in your journal every day
As you fall asleep
Defeated you know you can’t change your way
It is written it is fixed
Your inevitable demise slowly transfixed
